WordPress or Bespoke Development: Which Should You Choose?

The criteria for deciding between a popular CMS and bespoke code.

Two schools of thought have been at odds for ten years: WordPress and bespoke development. The right answer depends less on the technology than on the project itself.

WordPress, a sensible choice in many cases

WordPress still powers a significant share of the web. It's mature, cost-effective, and backed by a vast ecosystem of themes, plugins and developers. For a showcase website, a blog, a simple catalogue or a modest-sized shop, it does the job perfectly well. Installation is quick, training teams is straightforward, and maintenance is well understood.

The limits of WordPress

Piling on plugins undermines performance and security. Every extension is an open door. Very specific requirements — a particular business logic, deep integration with internal tools, a radically different interface — quickly run up against WordPress's limitations. At that point, the compromise ends up costing more than bespoke development would.

Bespoke development: an architecture that's truly yours

Bespoke development produces a lighter, faster website, built around your actual needs. Modern technologies (React, Next.js, Node) enable experiences on a par with the best web products, with an architecture that can scale. The initial investment is higher, but every feature added afterwards is easy to maintain.

How to decide

Three questions can help you decide: does your project have a unique business need? Does it aim to evolve into a platform, a SaaS, or an application? Can you afford a larger initial investment? Three 'yeses' point towards bespoke development. Three 'noes' point towards WordPress.

A third way

Some teams combine both: WordPress for content (blog, magazine, static pages) and a bespoke application for the functional side. This 'headless' architecture is gaining ground in 2026.
